Why DSVC collects member and customer information

When you become a member of DSVC or get involved in DSVC activities on this website or elsewhere, DSVC responds to your interest by offering to keep you informed about DSVC events and programs. While print DSVC communications are a benefit of membership, email announcements are available to members and non-members as well. You have the choice of whether or not to give us your information or receive DSVC email announcements. If you choose to subscribe to these announcements, you have our commitment that they will be topical, timely and relevant to your professional and cultural interests, and sent no more than 50 times a year. Furthermore, DSVC will never sell or rent your information to another party, or use it in any way other than that described in this statement. DSVC will prosecute any parties who illegally attempt to mine member data from the site.

DSVC members

If you are a member and you have supplied your email address, you will automatically receive DSVC email announcements. If you would prefer not to receive the email announcements, you may opt out of receiving them at any time by unsubscribing or contacting us at online@dsvc.org.


If you are a nonmember with a free account, you can use most of the features of the site with supplying minimal personal information to DSVC. If you would like to stay informed about DSVC programs and activities, you can provide your name and email address and opt in to receiving DSVC email announcements. If at any time you wish to stop receiving these emails, you may opt out of receiving them at any time by unsubscribing or contacting us at online@dsvc.org.

Website features requiring the submission of personal information

Submission of personal information to the DSVC website is entirely voluntary, except in the case of members, for whom current names, and email addresses must be on file. Most areas of the website may be used without supplying any personally identifiable information.

When you join DSVC, we request your name & email address. The information you have supplied is used to get an accurate picture of our membership as a whole and to provide you with the full benefits of membership, including publications, mailings and discounted registration for DSVC events. After joining, you can update any of your information on the web at any time by logging in.

Site status updates

If you wish to receive information about specific new features or services when they are added, we ask for contact information including your name and email address.


From time to time we request information from users of the site via surveys. Participation in surveys is completely voluntary. Information requested may include contact information (such as name and email address), demographic information (such as zip code and age), and professional information (such as skills, areas of expertise, and subjects of interest). This information will not be released under any circumstances in a manner that will identify the respondent. Personally identifiable information is requested only for internal purposes (for example, to avoid asking for the same information more than once or to improve what DSVC offers the community). Survey information will also be used for monitoring or improving the use of and satisfaction with this site.

DSVC Joblist

Joblist is DSVC’s online job search and recruitment center for the design community. Employers: If you wish to post available jobs on Joblist, we ask for information about the job you are offering, such as the job title, type of position, your company’s city and state, required skills and areas of practice, and a job description. This information is available to other Joblist users, so that potential employees may assess the opportunity. We also request company contact information such as your contact name, company name, address, and email. To protect your privacy, we give you the choice of revealing your contact information to other users, or posting your job anonymously. In either case, your contact information is collected for purposes of authentication and so that DSVC may contact you in the event that your Joblist account is being misused.

Registration for DSVC activities

If you wish to register for a DSVC conference or other event, we ask for contact information such as your name, school or company name, job title, telephone number, and email address, and financial information including your credit card number and expiration date. Contact information is used to send you important messages regarding the activities or events for which you registered and events for which you may be interested in later. Financial information is used for billing purposes and to fill your orders.

Subscribing to DSVC email announcements

If you wish to receive timely information about select DSVC programs and events, you may subscribe to DSVC email announcements. Announcement subjects include upcoming conferences, exhibitions, publications and new interactive services. Subscribers can receive up to 50 email messages per year.

Log files

DSVC collects aggregate information in the form of log files recorded by the web server. This information includes how many visits we have had to our webpages, the IP address of the computer that person was using, and the address of the referring page.

We use this information to analyze trends, administer the site, track users’ movement through the site, and gather broad demographic information for aggregate use. None of this information is linked to personally identifiable information.

Use of cookies

A cookie is a piece of data stored on the user’s hard drive containing information about the user. The DSVC website uses cookies for purposes of session state management—that is, to give users a persistent identity in the database while they submit forms and go through any multi-step processes. Once the user leaves the site, the session information is held for one day only and then purged from the database.

Ownership of information

DSVC is the sole owner of the information collected on all areas of this site. DSVC will not sell, share, or rent this information to others in ways different from those disclosed in this statement.

DSVC takes every precaution to protect website users’ information. All of our users’ personally identifiable information is restricted in our offices. Only board members, committee members and staff who need the information to perform a specific job (for example, a customer service representative) are granted access to personally identifiable information. Furthermore, all of these individuals are kept up-to-date on our security and privacy practices. Every quarter, as well as any time new policies are added, our board members are notified and/or reminded about the importance we place on privacy, and what they can do to ensure our members information is protected. Finally, the servers on which we store personally identifiable information are kept in a secure environment.
