Salary Range:

High 40’s to 50, plus a generous benefits package that includes 403(b) retirement matching that can be as much as 8 to 10 percent of your salary; tuition benefits for you and your children, and a tuition benefit reduction for a spouse; and 10 days of vacation, in addition to 13 holiday days a year.

Job Summary:

The Designer creates high-quality print and online communication materials that support the University and Development and External Affairs division and their highest priorities, including fundraising and alumni engagement and undergraduate recruitment. In all efforts, the Designer brings the SMU brand to life in ways that reinforce the University’s consistent messages and help diverse audiences see the benefits for themselves of strengthening their relationships with SMU. The Designer handles all design-related tasks from concept creation through to archiving the completed project.

Candidate must provide samples (or a way to access samples) of past work and a well-written cover letter for full consideration. 

Job Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as lead designer for a key University initiative. Designer is responsible for creating graphic look and feel for assigned projects that reinforces and extends the overarching SMU brand – and for communicating consistent messages to key audiences in ways appropriate and relevant to them. Materials include multipage brochures, web pages, emails, programs, invitations, newsletters and more. 

  • Obtain estimates, build budgets and create production schedules. Coordinate production, art direct photography and work with writers. Communicate job status to team members. Oversee production and attend press checks as needed. Support team as needed on projects outside the primary initiative.

  • Record time, approve vendor invoices, submit disks to be archived, check in samples for files, close jobs, and other duties as needed to support the Integrated Marketing team.

Job Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor’s degree is required; preferably in the field of visual communications or other related design field. 

A minimum of three years’ work experience creating marketing materials in a team environment is required. Design experience for a nonprofit and/or in higher education preferred. 


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills to work cooperatively with faculty, and staff. Must also demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in writing. Professional presentation and negotiation skills, the ability to develop solutions based on marketing problems and the ability to transfer concepts into a visually appealing package with compelling copy are essential. 

Candidate must have strong time management, planning and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and objectives in a deadline driven environment and meet deadlines. Must also have the ability to handle numerous tasks concurrently with careful attention to details and with accuracy. Strong project management and skills are essential. 

Candidate must demonstrate strong problem solving, analytical and conflict resolution skills with the ability to identify, analyze problems and devise solutions. Must also be a self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. The ability to work creatively and proactively with colleagues in a team environment is essential. 

Candidate must possess a strong knowledge of off-set printing and experience with press checks. 

Candidate must have a strong working knowledge of the following: Macintosh OS; InDesign; Illustrator; Photoshop (on both print and online projects); FileMaker Pro; Microsoft Word (or equivalent). 

Knowledge of designing for HTML, CSS, JavaScript strongly preferred. Dreamweaver is highly desirable. 


Physical/Environmental Demands:

  • Must have the ability to sit for long periods of time.
