The Executive Director of Creative Marketing reports to the AVP of Marketing & Communications, and is responsible for managing all aspects of the creative function to grow, engage and inspire people to get involved with SMU.
This role helps shape the strategy, aesthetic and verbal direction of the SMU brand and requires a proven track record of conceptual, storytelling and strategic thinking, especially on integrated campaigns.
More specifically, this role leads a team that develops digital/offline content to engage donors, prospective students, alumni and the broader community.
The ideal candidate will have deep art direction experience with a strong focus on digital, and extensive expertise in creating and shaping content that is shared across digital, social, paid media, video, mobile and print. This person is a leader by example and an active team member who works alongside their team to elevate the work and inspire innovation
Lead & direct the work of a talented team of designers (digital & print) & writers, in the production of digital & print content. Influence & shape the direction of photo, video, social, web & other content in collaboration with colleagues. Conduct brainstorming sessions with creative, web, social & photo/video teams, maintaining strategic & creative thinking to develop innovative & actionable initiatives. Lead the development of marketing campaigns & new concepts for projects, & oversee them to completion in collaboration with colleagues in Marketing & Communications & other departments. Review & approve content developed by the team, ensuring deliverables that effectively address marketing goals & meet branding guidelines. Prioritize work in collaboration with the planning team to establish production schedules, measure results & track insights.
Actively coach and mentor creative team of nine people (and potentially growing); providing marketing staff with information, educational opportunities and experiential growth opportunities. Oversee team budgets and manage expenses.
Collaborate closely with a cross-functional team to ensure content is meaningful and valuable to target audiences, so that it advances Development and External Affairs priorities and can also be leveraged by Admission, schools and units. Examples of the types of content will include but not be limited to: web stories, social media campaigns, fundraising campaign materials and proposals, videos, SMU magazine and other regular communications with alumni and donors, to name a few.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree is required. Masters preferred. Degree in Marketing or Advertising is desirable.
A minimum of ten years of professional work experience managing designers and writers in an agency or deadline-driven in-house setting is required.
Experience creating integrated content across all marketing channels including digital, social media, paid media, video, mobile, print, etc. is also required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Candidate must demonstrate strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to forge strong working relationships and manage interests of multiple stakeholders. Must also demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in writing. A strong customer service orientation is essential.
Candidate must demonstrate strong problem solving skills with the ability to identify, analyze problems and devise solutions. Strong analytical skills and the ability to think collaboratively, strategically and creatively while participating in senior-level decision-making is essential.
Candidate must possess strong leadership skills with the ability to provide focus and motivation to professional staff in a goal-driven, fast-paced and changing environment. Must also be highly skilled with coaching and mentoring a team of creative team members, and able to create content.
Candidate must have a strong focus in digital, and a deep portfolio that shows creative and thinking process. Must also demonstrate a commitment to remain current with new technology, industry trends and techniques. A strong working knowledge of HTML coding and Adobe software (In Design, Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects, etc.) is preferred
Prior project management experience, with a focus on creative direction preferred. Expertise in marketing to Gen Z and/or high-end consumers is desirable.
